Joan Young Day

Today I want to join in and celebrate Joan Young Day. Today she is going to be the first woman to hike the full length of the North Country Trail here in the US. This is a huge accomplishment for a hiker, especially one who is the very first. Follow the link above to find out more about this great event.

Now, who is Joan Young? Many of you already know the answer to that. She is our friend Sharkbytes. She is maybe the greatest hiker I know. I consider myself a hiker, but I'm just an observer compared to her. My hikes are always short ones that even a beginner can do, but hers cover over half the width of the United States.

I'm going to try to keep the rest of this post short so this is more about Sharkbytes today. She deserves a lot of credit for what she is about to do. There is more about all of this over at Nature Center Magazine. And you can visit My Quality Day to congratulate Sharkbytes yourself.

Congratulations, Joan. You have inspired me and many other hikers to go farther and farther. Thank you!

Nature Center Magazine - We have a very special Nature Site Of The Week today honoring Sharkbytes and her blog My Quality Day. Go on over to take a look. Then give Sharkbytes a visit to congratulate her for her huge accomplishment.

  2. I just went over and finally became a Follower...don't know why I got knocked off her blog..I used to follow her and then it got lost somewhere...what an accomplishment for her! And I know she went to the U.P. and saw its beauty which makes me so proud to be able to say that is my home, too.

  5. We forget what it means to be a hero, sometimes ones incredible accomplishments go unnoticed. With the shark moniker I thought she was into scuba.

  9. I have never been a hiker. In my youth, I did love to ride horses and covered a lot of territory on horseback but not on my own two feet. Joan deserves so much credit for getting out there and hiking, over hill and dale, through forests, watching sunsets and sunrises, and seeing all kinds of beautiful and interesting things and writing about it for her fellow hikers and for folks like me who wouldn't know much if she didn't share the knowledge she gains from her adventures.

That she's still at it, after so many years is really an inspiration and she definitely has earned her very own day! Congratulations, Joan.
