Dark-Eyed Junco

These aren't the best pictures of a junco I've ever gotten, but I have an excuse. I took them through the window of my back door. That seems to have taken the quality way down for some reason. It's a shame because the bird was so very close, just at the edge of my back porch.

Seeing this bird back there inspired me to try getting another bird feeder. Many of my blogger friends have been telling me to do it, but I haven't because it hasn't worked for me at all in the past. But my feeders have always been in the front of the house. Maybe it's time to try one near the back porch now.

My back door has a full length window on it. I open it every day so my dog can look outside. She watches out that back door like a couch potato watches television. My dad used to do the same thing for his dogs too, so I knew it would be a good idea. The only thing is I have to wash the nose prints off the window.

I've been noticing a lot of activity out my back door recently. A couple of posts ago I took pictures of that rabbit from the same position. I'm going to have to pay more attention back there. maybe when I get a good bird feeder set up I'll have lots of good pictures. Maybe if I keep the window a little cleaner they'll come out better too.

When I first saw this bird there were two of them. I sat and just watched them because my camera and my phone were both in the other room. After the other bird flew away I kept watching this one. It didn't seem to want to leave so I finally decided to take a chance and go get my camera. The bird was still there when I came back.

I crouched down at the window and began taking picture after picture, expecting the bird to fly away. It didn't seem to want to go anywhere. I got more pictures of this little Junco than anything else I've ever done. The only problem is that these were the best. I finally got tired and went and sat back down. The bird lasted another good minute before it finally flew away.

Whenever I see a junco I forget what kind of bird it is. It always looks familiar, so I know I should know the name, but I never do. The good thing is that I have my handy bird guide app iBird. I'm still not perfect using it so it took me awhile to find out what I had here, but I eventually found it.

The app has vast information on just about any bird in North America. It even has comments from people who have recently seen a particular bird. I haven't really had time to look at most of the information about these Dark-Eyed Juncos. Maybe when I read a little bit I'll finally start remembering the name of this bird when I see one.

I used to see so many different types of birds. I haven't in a couple of years now. Maybe if I can finally set up a successful feeder that can change back for the positive. But I don't want to get my hopes up too much. I think I'll try though. I'll pick up some stuff on my next trip to town. So one of these times you'll find out if it worked or not. I'll talk to you later.

  1. A good memory remind is to write and keep a log of who you see. Going over it reinforces it. That is how I remember all the latin names for plants.

    1. I usually just write about all this stuff on the blog. I've been trying to learn plants for forever. I don't think I'll ever get them right.

  2. I sometimes have trouble taking pictures through the window. If there is even a little speck of something on the glass the camera will try to focus on that instead of what I'm trying to take the picture of. I think yours turned out wonderful though

    1. I usually have luck with the camera not picking up the window smudges, but it does grab reflections like a magnet. The majority of my pictures of this bird came out blurry. I took dozens.

  3. Those junco shots are good. They may not be the prettiest bird out there, but they seem very cheerful, and so they make me feel good.

    1. yeah, I've seen much prettier birds, but I agree, they are cheerful little birds. And they're all I've seen recently, so I'm grateful for them.

  4. We get birds around here sometimes that look a little like juncos - but I don't think they are.

    1. Maybe your birds are a close relation to juncos. My bird guide tells me that juncos are a type of sparrow.

  5. I can't remember perennials or birds names anymore--I think my memory is fading. But that is okay...they have books to remind us. :)

    1. That's the great thing about books. I can't remember a lot of bird names anymore because of lack of practice, and I've never been good with plants.
