American Robin

There is something I forgot to mention that happened the same day that I was being mercilessly hunted by those evil vampirous mosquitoes. What I didn't mention was that I saw a few good things too. For instance, this American Robin.

While I was in the meadow at the back of the park taking a breather from the chase, I heard a bird singing from high up in a tree. Usually when I look for the bird that is making those sweet sounds it turns out to be a useless endeavor The only thing I see when I look to the trees is green leaves, and plenty of them.

What greeted me this time though was this colorful little bird. I was even able to move to a good position to get a few pictures and it didn't even fly away. Most birds that I do find are very quick to fly away as soon as I put my finger on the button of my camera. I think they do it just to tease me.

I could have moved a little closer to this bird, but I feared moving directly beneath it. I didn't want to suffer the consequences of that. Do you know what would have happened? Well, do you? That's right. Splat! Right in the eye! A bird's favorite thing to do.

Okay, that's enough of that. A robin isn't exactly something new for me to show. As a matter of fact I see them every day. I think I have more pictures of robins than any other animal, even squirrels! There are so many of them around here that it's our official state bird. So why am I showing you this one?

I'm showing it to you because, for one, I wanted to use the name "American Robin" in a post title. It makes it so much easier to find it here. Actually, the real reason is that I just liked the pictures and I wanted to share them with you. The colors seemed to just pop out. I think it's the new settings I'm using for my camera.

Hmm, I think that'll do it. Did you like the post? Well then leave a comment and tell me how much. (Or if you just want to tell me that this was ridiculous trash, that's okay too. But be polite about it.)

  2. I enjoyed the post very much. I'm glad you didn't get splatted in the eye. Although I haven't been so good about leaving comments lately, I have to tell you I read each of your posts every day and always enjoy them. Your outlook on life just brightens my day as do your photos.

  3. I expect to see some splats getting right in your eyes. It will then add more fun to our life, and this is the value the robin is posted. Isn't it? (hahahaha.....)

  5. Ridiculous trash? Never! Thanks for sharing something you enjoyed. It was a very sweet post.

The reason your colors "popped" (blue skies blue against the orange breast of the robin) was because you were able to expose properly for the sky and the bird at the same time. This is more possible shortly after sunrise and before sunset because the sun is still hitting your subject but it's low enough in the sky that it's not blowing out the sky.

    Great post!

  6. Not ridiculous at all. I don't get many pictures of living creatures myself because if it can move it does so as soon as I get my camera...lol

  7. Hi Ratty- One of those state birds just flew to the top of my picnic table. But getting pics with nice contrast is always worth orchids rather than onions, so Horray!

  8. I like the angle that you took that photo.
And, sometimes if you risk the splat, you can get some really neat photos from under them too.....
    just protect your camera. ha

  10. Nice photo taken beautifully with the bird behind a bright blue sky. I suppose you were feeling pretty relaxed and enjoy while the bird tweets!

    Cheers :)

  11. These are pretty good pictures. We have a lot of robins in our yard. I like to watch them hunt for bugs after the lawn is mowed.

  12. Great photos of the Robin!! I don't see many. But I can hear them in the evenings. I love their sound. I did see one on the neighbor's lawn the other day as I was leaving in my car. I wish I had my camera. He was listening very intently to the ground and all of a sudden down went his beak and he had a worm. It's amazing. It was so cute the way he was bending his head to listen.
    Be careful of those "splats"..Ha!

  13. Thanks for sharing nice photos - Robins are a sign that Spring is coming here in New England, except this year - there was a flock of crazy robins that hung out all winter behind my work place.

  14. I love Robins, we know Spring is near when they come to our yard.

We have one who love to sing from the top of the highest tree in our yard. The other day one caught a moth and was proudly showing it to everyone who would look. He even posed for my camera, I will have to get that posted.

    Have a wonderful weekend,
    SQ

  15. Kruel - I see very many robins every day, but not in these trees. I always hear birds in these trees, but don't usually see them. It was a little bit easy.
    -

Mountain Woman - I'm glad I didn't get splatted too. The bird wanted to do it.

Thanks, I enjoy your blog every bit as much.
    -

Rainfield - Yeah, that's the value. I would have had a story that was even more fun if the bird had splatted me. :)
    -

Glynis - There are at least as many of these birds around me as all of the others combined, so this won't be the last of them here.
    -

Rene - You got the angle of the sunlight right on. It was shining sideways. I've been on a lot of my adventures during those times of day recently. Midday has been much too harsh for pictures.
    -

Ann - After you see animals more often, you'll develop an ability to be ready for them. I've just figured out how to go where they are.
    -

Sharkbytes - I'm glad there are so many of them around to get a lot of practice on.
    -

The Retired One - I considered moving closer under it, but that bird was waiting for me, and it was cocked and loaded.
    -

Icy BC - I was lucky that the sun was shining at just the right direction.
    -

ZH Ong - I was feeling relaxed for the moment, but most of that day was difficult.
    -

Elizabeth Barrette - They'll hunt for bugs in freshly mowed lawns around here even while it's raining. They are fun to watch.
    -

Ginnymo - It's very fun watching them on the ground. Robins are one of the few types of birds that I've seen catching food. This one wanted to splat me, but I was ready for him.
    -

Mike - They were here all winter here this year too. Everybody thought I was imagining things, but I have pictures to prove it. :)
    -

SquirrelQueen - You'll have a good post. Robins are one of my favorites because they let me get a few pictures. Not all birds cooperate as much.
