A Rest At The Top Of The Hills

When I want to write a post I usually wonder what to write about first. Most of the time I get my subject from some of my pictures. If the picture isn't anything I can write about then I never share it. I have to have something to write about because I don't consider just the pictures to be great art or anything like that. I have to have both photos and writing.

My picture today shows one of the many viewing areas in Stone Park. They have these at several places on the highest hills there. You can see for miles from up there. It's nice to just sit on a bench and just look out over the countryside. I do that whenever I'm here.

When I talk about the hills here I'm not talking about something small. These hills are more what you would consider to be mountains. They're that big. The reason I call them hills though is that they're actually different than mountains in one important feature. Hills are made of dirt and mountains are made of rock. There is one section of hill here that is called a mountain. I can't remember the name. Maybe it's a real mountain, but I suspect not. I'll talk to you later.

  1. Isn't it funny how you know the reason a hill is a hill and a mountain is a mountain but you don't really think about the significance of that until it's actually pointed out to you. I only live near hills though some of them are incredibly big and many people would class them as mountains purely on that reason!!

    1. I never really knew what the technical difference was until a year or two ago. I think one of this posts commentators told me.

    1. I once walked down from the top of one of these nearby hills and then back up. My dog and I were both exhausted.

Is it a mountain or a hill?

You get me confused when I go hiking to tomorrow.

    1. On your hike you can investigate which one you are traveling on.

  6. Hmmm...you've got me thinking.....

I think I refer to mountains as "hills" in an affectionate way. Or I think of mountains as jagged peaks and hills as tree-lined and "soft." Does that make sense?

    1. That actually makes really good sense to think of them that way because it's kind of true.

    1. It all makes sense to me too now. I didn't know the difference a few years ago.

  9. Looks like a great place to just sit and contemplate life. Lovely view. I love hills and mountains. I miss the San Francisco area. Seven months in flat Sacramento have me longing for the cable cars "climbing halfway to the stars" ! I'm off Wednesday to India again - for four months.

    1. Actually Sioux City here may resemble San Francisco in some places with all of the hills.
