I Can See For Miles

What you see above is a nice looking nature scene from atop the hills of Stone State Park in Sioux City, Iowa. But looks are a little deceiving. Look all the way to the back in the photo. It's kind of hard to see, but there appears to be something other than nature back there.

I did a post just like this one awhile back, but I just like the whole idea, so I'm going to do this again. You may recognize what I'm talking about as you read, but maybe this is all new to you. Either way it's kind of a fun little idea with a zoom camera.

You really have to zoom in a lot, but all the way back in the distance is another city and another state. All the way past the state park, all the way past the cornfields is North Sioux City, South Dakota. This place is across the river from Sioux City, Iowa.

It's kind of fun that I can get such good detail on the buildings from so far away. I can read the writing on the water towers in the original pictures. You can almost make it out in these. They both say the name of the city.

Here above I zoomed back a little bit to show you that it really is the same scene. You can see the two water towers in the same place. They're just a bit farther away. Those fields are a lot bigger than they look in the pictures. I think the Big Sioux River is hidden behind the trees.

I like coming up here on this hill and looking out over everything. That's one of the appeals of this place. The thing most people like to do at Stone Park is drive through the hilly forest roads. But stops along the road like this one makes it even better. Talk to you later.

  1. Makes me lonely for this part of the state. I bought a bag of candy made there from Palmer Candy yesterday. Love Okibodji and that area also.

    1. The greatest part of this city is that nature is so close to it.

  4. You must have a really good zoom on your camera, that city looked very far away! Impressive photos, I agree it's cool too that you can see a city in another state!

    1. The zoom is good, but it's by far not the best zoom on a camera. I actually chose a camera with a lesser zoom because it was a better camera.

  5. Ratty,
I am currently working on a nature poetry anthology chapbook, "Mother Nature's Trail" that will benefit Wolf Creek Habitat. I would like to use your deer photo on the cover. Since the proceeds will be going to the organization, I would like to use the photo free of charge. I will putting money into the book and will not be making anything off it. Anyway, I think your deer photo would be perfect for the cover. I would give proper credit if you allow me to use it. If you would like to contact me, my email address is stacyrsavage@yahoo.com. By the way, if the photo is used for the cover, it will appear in black and white.

    1. You have my permission to use the picture as long as it's on this website. Let me know which one. If you're looking for the original, I don't have it anymore. There is a way at the top of the blog to contact me privately if you'd like a private response.

  7. That's just lovely. There was a place in South Africa I liked to go - Northcliff hill in Johannesburg - where you could see forever. It was very urban but Johannesburg has a lot if trees so the view was very green. London is a lot flatter in comparison and very urban.
