Little Chubby

Squirrels are still mostly hiding so far this year, but the other animals are sensing the arrival of spring. Even so, I found Little Chubby here coming out for a look. This one was way up in a tree, not wanting to come down very close yet.

It seems strange to find such a fat looking little squirrel at the end of winter. Usually they'd be kind of skinny by now, and out beginning the look for food. But is this squirrel really fat? I think it's just a trick in the way it is posing for me.

Even if it is just a trick though, that chubby look makes him look like a mini groundhog, but much cuter, doesn't it? Maybe the squirrel is huddled up because it's cold. I tend to doubt it because it has been getting very warm around here.

When I took these pictures a couple days ago the ground was still covered in snow, but now it's all almost gone. Spring is arriving right on time, and more importantly, right when I predicted it! By the first day of spring we will have no more snow on the ground.

And here is the squirrel a little farther away, but with the traditional skinny spring look. I knew the little squirrel was faking! I guess I deserved it for walking around the forest in a rat suit. Yes, my days as Batman are over for now. I like adventure more than the Batman thing gave me, and it's more fun and dangerous being a mouse... er, rat anyway.

Quite a few years ago there was a commercial for an old video game called Phoenix for the Atari system. The game was about mutant birds attacking. Their slogan was "The Birds Are Back!" I haven't seen any mutants recently, but maybe you can guess what I'll have for you next time.

  1. He is a chubby looking little fellow, he must have found a good source of food during the snowy months. Since they don't hibernate they gotta work all winter to look like that.

  2. When you mentioned how chubby he was my first thought was that he must be the guy that's been emptying out my bird feeder every day...lol

  3. I must have fed the squirrel through Internet.

Good to hear spring is arriving for you...it is one of my favourite seasons with the re-birth of everything natural.

  5. Gosh, he is a very chubby little fellow, but a lovely sight to see, I adore squirrels, even though many just say they are just rats in different clothes!

    Happy springtime!

  6. I got a chuckle at the thought of you walking around in the forest in a rat suit, although I've been told the old camo that I sometimes wear looks pretty "ratty".

  7. I look way fluffier when I scrunch up like the squirrel was in the first photo. But I am as thin as an end-of-winter squirrel is.

  8. @SquirrelQueen
I think he's mostly just scrunched up to look that way, but this forest is like a paradise for these animals.

    @Ann
He might be a bird feeder invader. There are probably many of them not far away.

So you're the one that did it!

You got it right. It is definitely mine. Everything is waking up in the spring, and new life is everywhere.

They're some of the most fun creatures to watch. Actually all rodents can be called just rats in different clothes, but there are too many differences. Even us humans have many ratlike characteristics of our own.

I have a few posts where I even have pictures of the rat suit walking through the forest. Some of my best work.

I think the squirrel was doing exactly the same thing. He was trying to become a well known celebrity like you.

  9. Even his face is fat. Maybe he put by and extra-food store of nuts for the winter.

  10. Certainly looks like it has some junk in the trunk. lol At first I thought pregnant, and then knowing he's a male, maybe a few too many nuts stashed under his pillow. He he

  11. Sounds like spring has sprung in your neck of the woods. This little fella must have had a good winter cache to look this tubby. Nothing like good squirrel planning to keep the spare tire inflated.

  12. My squirrels are still chubby here, but then again, I feed them! I have been putting out a suet mix for them and they are eating it as fast as I put it out!!! Squirrels are spoiled here, Ratty. :)

  15. This squirrel is a bit on the heavy side but quite cute. The ones here are kinda lean in spite of regularly raiding 2 of my bird feeders.

  16. oh, he looks very healthy, either the winter stored his fat from inactivity, or had too much food stored. lovely and cute pictures by the way.

  17. What a chubby and cute fellow. I wonder how chubby that squirrel would be after winter is finally over.
