Gray Squirrel

The Eastern Gray Squirrel. This is the most common type of squirrel in the United States. It's not as common here in southeast Michigan, where I live. There are still a lot of them though. I usually have to go away from my neighborhood to see a big gray squirrel like this one. And I did just that.

My own dominant squirrels are Fox Squirrels. Then there is the black variant of the grays. We also have Red Squirrels, the smallest and cutest of all. The grays remain in the background. But only a few miles away these gray squirrels are plentiful, and big too.

I would show you more pictures of this guy, but he never moved when I was taking these. You'd see the same one over and over, or a few others from when I first saw him that are very blurry. Instead I bring you this one where he looks almost as cute as a bunny. I like squirrels, no matter what kind they are.

Nature Center Magazine - Emma has a new Nature Site Of The Week today. Nature Site Of The Week was my own personal idea. I knew Emma Springfield would be the perfect writer for it, so I begged her to do it. She has always enjoyed reading blogs, but she never had one of her very own before. I'm glad I got her to start her internet writing this way. She has helped many websites become at least a little more widely known already. Go see which site she features this week.

  1. Great shot Ratty, he/she is a beauty. We don't see grays in our area so your photo is a real treat.

  2. He is a cute one and he does look pretty big too. Maybe once he figures out the modeling thing he'll do better at giving you multiple poses.

  3. It's always great to see the critters, even over and over again. Was just watching a bunny and one of my ground squirrels in the lawn.

  7. I like the squirrels too. I really hate when people go on and on about how much they hate them at their bird feeders. Oh, the measures they take to prevent them from coming around! I don't mind them, they make me laugh.

  9. I see mostly fox squirrels in my yard - they are quite fun to watch! I think there may be gray squirrels in the mountain forests near my home, but I couldn't say for sure.

  10. I don't see squirrels around here unless I go to one of the parks or to the Botannical Gardens in San Francisco. I love your fox squirrels which I've never seen before. I really love them.
