The Rabbit

The little critter I have for you today is this brown Rabbit. I thought I should bring you something that could hop away, since I've been showing you things that are a little more rooted to the ground these past few days. What better animal to bring along than a rabbit?

Rabbits are probably considered to be the cutest of all rodents by the majority of humans. Maybe that's because squirrels are just too ornery to be considered the cutest. Or maybe it's because rabbits seem so gentle, and they have those adorable long ears. Do any of you know why rabbits are loved so much?

You know, I haven't gotten a good picture of a rabbit since almost a year ago. I see so many animals running around out there that you would think rabbits would be among them, but I guess they just aren't forest creatures. There are a lot of rabbits near where I live, but not too many on the hiking trails.

I actually took this picture from my truck. I was out searching around for a few new exciting places, and maybe a hiking trail or two, and I happened to see this little ball of fur having a snack on the side of a quiet road. When I stopped the truck I honestly didn't expect this rabbit to stay where it was, but it didn't seem to mind that I was there at all.

It seemed just a little more interested in the tasty little lunch it was eating. I don't know what was so good, but it looked different from the grass around it. You can see in this last picture that the rabbit has a mouth full as it checked around just to be sure there was no more danger than me.

I would have loved to tell you a story of how I hunted this rabbit with my camera until it surrendered these pictures to me, but it just didn't happen that way. I guess some adventures are easier than others, even when it involves an animal that could easily hop away.

  4. I love rabbits. I had one as a pet when I was young. It died from a broken heart when it's mate got out of the cage and our dog killed it. They are gentle and more like a pet cat. I always wanted another one. I even was thinking about it a few years back..ha! They love clover. Maybe that is what it is eating. You got some great photos of it Ratty!! I did see a couple little Cottontail bunnies last year but the fox gets them I think. haven't seen any this year. And with all the foxes I have out here now, they don't have a chance...

  5. I last seen your rabbits when Alice was chasing after them. I have captured a critter that hopped in front of me, and disappeared into the bush. They are all great at enlightening our days.

  7. Yeah, why does everyone love rabbits?? I do, so I'm guilty too. Maybe it is that they don't make noise or it's that cute little pouf of a tail or wiggly nose.

  11. i think that you just have a vibe about you that make the animals feel at ease. they don't seem to be afraid of you, on the contrary, they seem to like your presence enough to not run away. great pics!

i rescued 7 baby rabbits one time and hand fed them until they were able to eat themselves and then set them free.

  12. My daughter loves rabbits and has her own bun bun stuffed animal who is an indispensable member of our family. I have pics of my self holding buns. THey are soft and quiet and I do agree, it's those ears.

  13. Rose - I had a few rabbits when I was a kid, but they were really my dads pets. He grew up on a farm, and always brought home animals.
    -

Icy BC - I think rabbits must be made for petting because of their soft fur.
    -

VanillaSeven - Squirrels don't like to be petted though. I think I like both equally and for different reasons.
    -

Ginnymo - I think canine critters must like the taste of rabbits. You're right about the clover, I think that's what it's eating.
    -

Rainfield - I thought of Alice too when I saw that rabbit. I keep trying to get Alice to come back for a few more adventures, but I think she's busy watching cartoons lately.
    -

The Retired One - I would love to see a bear, just not too close though.
    -

Lin - I think rabbits have just the right combination to be the ultimate cute.
    -

Kruel - Yup! For some odd reason most of the wild animals here are very well fed and healthy.
    -

Poetic Shutterbug - Pet rabbits seem to be common with us nature lovers. I'm glad I have a dad who likes rabbits too.
    -

Betchai - Rabbits are fun. Maybe next time I'll have an exciting chase story with one too. :)
    -

PJ - I'm lucky I don't live in an area with very dangerous animals. I might become a meal, or I might end up with some very scary friends. :)
    -

Julia - I had a stuffed animal bunny when I was very young. My two older cousins, both girls, took it from me and accidentally ripped one of its ears off. They probably have forgotten, but I never have.

  16. SquirrelQueen - Yeah, rabbits may be like living Teddy Bears. I think most of us love them.
    -

Mountain Woman - We are lucky to have a lot of them here, just not in the forest. I was very close to this one, but I had to zoom in just a little bit.
