Anger Problem

Sometimes I think that squirrels just can't hold it in. No matter what they do, their anger inevitably comes boiling out in a loud torrent. I have tried in the recent past to show them as friendly creatures, but some of them can't help but blow their tops over nothing.

The other day I was leaving the lake to continue on a short hike, when I heard loud chittering sounds coming from far off to my left. I knew immediately it was a very angry squirrel. I was curious about what it was that angered this little devil so much, so I turned around to try and get a look at it.

It never stopped yelling at its target the whole time, so I immediately found its location. It was high up in a tree looking down at something. Its tail was flicking angrily like a whip. I could only see a dark shadow, but I couldn't pass up this opportunity to get a few pictures of this humorous event.

But what I really wanted to know was what it was angry at. So I changed a few settings on my camera so it could brighten up the picture. I pointed the camera at a dark part of the tree the squirrel was on, hoping it would enable the camera to now see the squirrel a little better. It worked well, and I could now see the squirrel and what it was focusing its anger on..

This rotten little squirrel was looking straight at me! Why? I was at least fifty yards away from it, maybe even farther. When it began yelling at me, and probably calling me every bad name it could think of, I was actually walking away from where the squirrel was located. This squirrel needs some anger management!

Didn't anybody tell this squirrel that the war was over? I go to the forest so I can get away from angry jerks, but squirrels seem to be among the worst of them sometimes. I sometimes think I should find that dragon again and promise it a nice squirrel stew.

That ends my ridiculousness for today.

  2. He was probably angry at you because he saw your camera - he did not want his mug shot plastered around the world via the Internet... Cute posting and thanks for sharing....!

  3. I think the squirrel is happily shouting at you. Don't you see it was so cute up there? A little cute thing must not be rated angry.

  4. Sometimes I think they just like to hear their own voices! I have a chipmunk who chirps and chirps at you...if you go towards it, it runs 10 yards, turns around and chirps some more. I sometimes have "conversations" with it....it stops, cocks its head when I ask it what is wrong, and then runs and chirps at me again..usually by climbing a big rock so he can "announce" his chirps like a lion roaring. Good grief, he needs to get over himself. ha

  6. That is just way too funny. From observing my little buddies I have learned that angry sounds are used when they detect a threat. That could have been a mama squirrel trying to distract you from her babies.

I do want you to know I had no idea what you would write today when I posted the photo on my photo blog, it is just too ironic!

  11. You just have been labeled as the bad boy of the woods by those squirrels. Too funny.

  12. I really don't think it's you it's yelling at Ratty. But there is something there in the woods that it is warning the others about. If a cat is lurking in the bushes or a Woodchuck sometimes, it will bark and bounce it's tail up and down. I watch over 30 squirrels a day here and know their habits pretty well. Sometimes mine will hide in that rock wall and bark and bark as it's looking at me for understanding or help. They sometimes act like they want to come inside where it's safe..LOL I think you are giving these squirrels a bum rap. Ha!

  13. See, I LIKE it when they chatter because then I know exactly where Hobbes and Grace are! They rat the kitties out all the time! Do you not like squirrels?? I'm getting that theme, Ratty.

  15. Icy BC - Yeah, the way squirrels can grip onto a tree is really fun to watch. If you look closely though, you can see fury on its face.

Mike - That might very well be it. I had been walking away from him though, so maybe hewas angry that I didn't take the time to make him famous.
    -

Rainfield - I agree that he was cute. Most squirrels are cute, but they are also the most angry and mean little creatures I've ever seen. They are like a group of monkeys would behave if you were teasing them with their favorite food.
    -

The Retired One - The squirrels in this forest are usually pretty quiet. I know what you mean about chipmunks though. They seem to be the most curious little creatures, and they just love attention. Some squirrels are like that, but some are just illtempered.
    -

Mom - Thank you! I will definitely take a look.
    -

SquirrrelQueen - It was definitely sounding angry, and it was flicking its tail like mad. I was not very closeto it though, and I had been moving away from it. It was a crazy one.

I'll check out your photo. You've got me very curious. :)

Ann - Squirrels need it, believe me.
    -

PJ - He does look cute there, but I wish he would just calm down a bit.
    -

Joe Todd - I wish the squirrels around here were so polite. Mine sometimes even throw things at people.
    -

Poetic Shutterbug - I'm just glad I didn't walk down the path it was near. Then it would have given me a bad hair day.
    -

Sharkbytes - I think that might be what it is. Those squirrels think I'm a criminal.
    -

Ginnymo - Some of these squirrels around here get pretty mean. It might have been looking at something else at first, but it was definitely focusing its anger at me. I've seen nice ones and very angry ones up close. These squirrels here don't like people very much at all. I should probably start feeding them.
    -

Lin - Actually squirrels are some of my favorite little critters, but the squirrels in these forests here are some of the most illtempered little jerks I have ever seen. Maybe I need to bring them a few treqats to warm them up a bit.
    -

Betchai - Oh squirrels can get very angry. I've been threatened by more squirrels than all other animals combined, and I've had several other animals upset with me including some very big ones. Sometimes squirrels are only trying to be cute, but this one was furious. I know some peope that only seem angry even though they aren't too. People sometimes tell me I'm like that.

  16. Ha ha! When I first moved into my last house, the squirrels in the oak tree constantly barked at me, and, on occassion, they would drop acorns on my head! They can be a little "squirrely". I have a new one here that I call "Bat S@#t Crazy".

  17. Rene - As you know, it takes awhile to get squirrels to warm up to you. Most people don't know they like to throw and drop things. I knew you'd find new squirrel pets.

  18. Angry squirrels are going to take over the world, they have already started here in Britain. They are all around us watching our every move.

  19. Sam - They certainly are! As a matter of fact, their notorious leader, Mr. Nutz, has already tried to overthrow my power here on this blog. He has already sent his squirrel armies rampaging across the world. I've been trying to warn everybody here for the last six months.
