Staring At A Blackbird

One thing I still have trouble remembering is to not let time get away from me. I'm writing this post in the middle of the night just a short time before I have it set to publish, because I tried to do way too much in one day. There's no way I could explain it all here but I can explain why, and then I'll get to why I have these pictures of this blackbird.

Before I began writing this blog I was searching for something to do. I felt bored with my life. It wasn't bad or anything, just not very fun or exciting. I was determined to find something fun I could do that would fill the boring parts of the day. For any of you who've been reading along here, you can see some of how I do it now.

The only problem is that it seems that I've outdone myself. Sometimes I completely run out of time now. It's actually a good problem to have. Some of you happily have the same problem. Others are still looking for a good solution. I'm having fun but sometimes I end up losing a little bit of sleep trying to catch up.

After that little bit of nonsense, it's on with the story of the day! I'd like to start off by saying sorry, I sometimes find the stupidest things funny. Read on and found out.

Okay, what am I talking about, and why do I have the pictures of the bird? I'll explain. This bird is a red-winged blackbird and it decided to watch me for some strange reason. It might have taken offense with me or something. I really don't know.

I was standing on a small walking bridge when I heard a curious bird call. I can't remember it now, but I wish I could. I still can't seem to remember the different sounds birds make. All I remember was this one had two calls, one ugly sounding call and then a sweet whistling sound that I tried to imitate.

The bird was perched atop an old dead tree branch, and it kept making those sounds and looking down at me. It was close to me, but not that close. I couldn't really understand why it was so interested in me. I wasn't near its nest as far as I knew. I was standing at the middle of a bridge. There weren't any trees that close.

After a few moments of studying me, it leaped into the air and settled on a higher branch that was just a little bit closer. It looked down at me and kept making those same sounds. Maybe it was protecting something, or maybe it was the best friend of that little rascal Mr. Nutz.

I didn't really care either way. What I cared about was getting pictures of this bothersome bird. I wasn't going to pass up an opportunity like this after all. Would you? Besides, I was standing on a man-made bridge, not this bird's nest. I had just as much right to be there as this angry bird, so I stubbornly decided to wait right there.

If you've ever been in a staring contest, you know what I'm talking about. I was determined not to lose this contest to a dumb old bird. I figured I'd stay there all day if necessary. I stood there looking at that bird, and it watched me right back. After awhile the bird gave up and flew away.

I won! I beat this bird in a staring contest. Hooray for me! I am the champion! What a great accomplishment. Please, please. No more applause. Thank you.

...And that's how I spent my day.

  3. The red-winged blackbird is my favorite bird. It's really the true sign that spring is here and I love his song.

I'm with you on the no time thing. I'm finding it hard on weekends now to visit, drop and comment on other blogs. And I have to get over that I don't HAVE to do those things. It's okay if I don't post every single day--a lot of other folks don't. Summertime and blogging is conflicting!!!

  5. Great photos of the bird Ratty and a great little story to go along with it of course. He was just as curious about you as you were about him. Ha!
I don't know how some people keep up with all the blogs on here . I can't. That's why I don't follow too many. It's hard enough with a few. I mainly got on here to have another place to put all my pictures and family information. Then when I'm dead and gone, the family can still come back here and visit my blogs. At least that is the way I'm hoping it will be.
I'm still having fun with the foxes. I have two pair out there. The one pair is getting used to me but the older pair still keeps their distance or run when they see me. The one male is getting so he wants to be around here all the time now. begging me for more nuts..Ha! he comes early in the mornings now and in the afternoons and evenings. Yikes! He does keep the squirrels away though, which is good. I get so frustrated with them at times. They won't stop jumping on my window.
Take care Ratty. Just take it slow and easy. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  8. I am impressed. Winning a staring contest with a bird is a feat unto it self. I think it is hard enough to begin with just to get a bird to HAVE a staring contest and if it decides to you are probably doomed. That is a cool accomplishment. Birds mostly are afraid of me. I have to sit down or hide behind a bush or something to really get good pictures or study them. I am a rather tall human so I scare them I think.

  9. Goofy bird! But even he went to sleep when it was night. Ne careful or you will develop "vulture eyes" like Snoopy!

  10. Ghosting Miranda - Thanks, I'm glad you like it.

Icy BC - I'm not so sure the blackbird thinks I won.
    -

Lin - Time management is one of the hardest things when the computer almost seems to call our names. It's a whole different world that's hard to want to leave even for a little while.
    -

Rainfield - You ain't seen nothin' yet. Well, maybe you have. But there's much more stupidity to come. :)
    -

Ginnymo - I know what you mean. Keeping up with all of these blogs is becoming difficult for me too. Sometimes I feel bad because I missed visiting somebody because I ran out of time that day. It's like being a juggler, but I like it. My mom has a similar idea as yours. She's the one who keeps the family stories.

I love reading about your foxes. I want to buy some nuts to bring a few animals closer to me too. I also found out from a friend from the other side of the world that bananas work very well too.
    -

Poetic Shutterbug - I actually got lucky catching the bird like that. You can see in the picture that he almost got away.
    -

Betchai - I really got lucky with that bird. These blackbirds are brave enough to stare that more than most other birds.
    -

Julia - I think that bird was thinking about dooming me. I think that bird was angry with me for some reason. I usually scare them too, and other animals, and children. Some little kids cry when they see me.
    -

Sharkbytes - I think I had a bad case of vulture eyes when I wrote this post. It was very late when I realized I hadn't written anything yet.

  11. I know what you mean. I felt bad not reading other's blogs this weekend (I am just catching up on Monday night here) because I was gone to a family wedding. I never want it to be a chore, but I find myself rushing to read them, which takes the joy out of it for me. I decided not to post today so I could get "caught up" on everything.
The redwinged blackbird is one of my favorite birds too, their call and song is very unique. they are usually easily scared of humans, so I don't know why he was so curious about you. That is interesting. Your shot of him in midair was really neat!

  12. The Retired One - I love both the natural world and the computer world so much that it does get to be time consuming. I find myself rushing with both sometimes. As you know yourself, that's when it's time to slow down and remember why I'm doing it. I wish I knew why it was interested in me. I got lucky with the midair shot.

  13. I've never seen a red-winged blackbird before, but I remember them being mentioned in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance:

"At age eleven you don't get very impressed with red-winged blackbirds. You have to get older for that."

    So true! :-)

The blackbirds here are either black (male) or brown (female).

  14. John - I never knew there were any with red wings before. I never really paid much attention until this year. I thought they were all only black. It took a closer look for me to find out about them. Now I'll have to see if there are some here that are just black.
